Tuna has all the traits that usually help a population withstand heavy fishing. However, did you know that it is one of the top three seafood items sold here in the states? This means that it's in high demand and would-be steady populations are unfortunately declining.
Here at Uma, we take fish procurement very seriously. Though demand is high, we make sure that we know where our seafood is coming from and use only the most responsibly sourced sustainable seafood. In the case of our yellow fin tuna, analyzing the catching method is extremely important.
Our tuna is caught in the wild via Pole or Troll method in the Pacific, primarily in the Philippines. Usage of the Pole or Troll method means that there is little or no bycatch when fishing, which is optimal since other methods, like the long line method, has a large chance of threatening endangered species such as sea turtles, sharks and seabirds.
